Haley Cassells 2022 Carlin Nalley Foundation Lisle Alumni Scholarship Recipient Grutzmacher Award6/8/2022
I would like to thank everyone that is a part of this foundation and what they have given me for the continuation of my future endeavors.
In the fall of 2022, I will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. While I am at Whitewater, I will study international business with a minor in Spanish. I plan to travel abroad to the sister school in Barcelona to further my knowledge and education in Spanish and work in the business field as well. In addition to this degree, I will travel for a company in different regions of the world and so much more. After my time at Wisconsin Whitewater, I plan on working for a corporation in the hopes of pursuing a career in the business world, whether that is flying in and out of the country or working in the human resources department. I am most proud of making it into the Rho Kappa Foundation, and the Spanish National Honors Society. These accomplishments showed how dedicated I am to my school career at Lisle High School and for the future. These will allow me to further my education in college at a higher standard. Senorita Amy Renguso was the most influential teacher for me because she was always able to push me to do bigger and better things in my Spanish career that I hope to continue in college. I have been able to learn the most from her out of my 4 amazing years at Lisle High School. Even though I only had her for one year, she made a big difference in my life, especially for my future endeavors. I would like to thank the Lisle Alumni in the recognition of this award. I am so honored to be receiving something given to me by past Lisle students. It is amazing to think that I graduated from the same school system as my grandmother and mother before me. With this award, I will do much to further my business career in the future. I cannot thank everyone from the Carlin Nalley Foundation enough for the support that they have given me, and I sincerely give my love to the foundation for the loss of Coach Carlin Nalley. My heart goes out to you. Best, Haley Cassells
I would like to thank you and everyone involved for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a high standing group of alumni and athletes. It is such an honor to be given this award. I would like to thank all the teachers and coaches that have pushed me in my life to make me the young adult I am today.
Throughout my time at Lisle High School, I had many very influential teachers. I would have to say that the teacher that had the most impact on me was Mr. Bamboat. He taught me that most people are willing to help you out if you ask for it. But if you have no desire to get better or pay attention, then other people are going to notice that and not put in much effort to help you. Which also leads me to my post high school plans. I will be attending the University of Arkansas and majoring in computer engineering. With this, I hope to be able to graduate in 4 years and work at a large company. My most significant memory at Lisle High School has to be when I got pulled up to varsity baseball my Freshman year and I was part of the Regional Championship team. Although beating Westmont in every sport my senior year was great, this has to top that. Being part of such a fun event at such a young age really inspired me to what I wanted to do when I was older. My goal from there on out, for every sport, was to win the regional championship. The feeling that I had after holding that plaque on the way home from the game was incredible. Looking at all the players that put blood, sweat and tears into that season really showed me what I could do in my upcoming high school years. Once again, I would like to thank the Carlin Nalley Foundation for giving me this opportunity and scholarship which will help pave a path for me onto my next journey in my life. Thank you, Nick Jachim
I have always grown up wanting to be a teacher. It has always felt like my destiny. My mother was a teacher and my sister will soon be one as well. I want to carry this on and be a math teacher. With that being said, I will be attending indiana state university. I have decided to major in mathematics teaching along with a double minor in Spanish and coaching. Along with teaching I feel it is a great experience to be involved in the same school. I will be able to do that by coaching on the side. At Lisle I grew up with the majority of the coaches also teaching within the district. This is my goal. I hope to stay together with my sports and I think this is a great way to do it.
Following my next educational milestone (in my hopes, graduation), I would like to find my first teaching job. Growing up and getting my k-12th grade education at a small school has made me realize, that’s the kind of environment I would like to teach in. Lisle has treated me so well. I am so grateful to have had so many opportunities throughout the years. I think it is so much better for students and their education when they are able to grow closer with their teachers. I want to have These kinds of relationships with my students. I have had so many friendships with my teachers over the years and that has been one of the most memorable parts of my education so far. I have not been rewarded with many awards here at Lisle. With that being said, I am most proud of receiving this award. The Babe Didrikson Zaharias award. At the senior banquet when I heard the description of this award I turned to my sister and said, “that would be really cool to get, its a great recognition.” I said this without having a single thought of even receiving the award. Upon actually receiving it and being called up to the stage, I was speechless. I remember walking up to the stage to receive my plaque, unable to keep a smile off my face. Later that evening I was greeted and enlightened about the scholarship money that comes with it to help me through my college education. I didn’t believe what was happening at this moment. I wondered to myself, why me? Why did they choose me for this award and scholarship? I looked back on all of my achievements over the years and I realized how far I have come. It’s been so amazing participating in 3 sports for multiple years at Lisle, I couldn’t have asked for a better time. I want to take this time to say thank you for this. I feel so blessed that someone has recognized me and the hard work I have put in to my sports and teams. It’s truly a blessing. Mr. Smith… This is the name of the teacher that has changed my life. I had Mr. smith for pre-calculus this year as a senior. He had not only taught me so much in this class, but also has been able to do it in a fun way. I never didn't look forward to this class. I always had fun and couldn’t wait to walk in and ask him how his day was going. Mr. Smith is the reason why I want to be a math teacher. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but I wasn’t sure for what. I used to think little kids would be better but after the start of this class… I knew math was where I belong. I love math, I mean I always have, but I never thought of teaching it. I can really say that he is the reason I know what I want to do with my life, and I will never forget that. To the Lisle Alumni I want to say thank you. I cannot express enough how much this award means to me. I am so unbelievably excited to start my college education in the fall but I won’t lie it has been a scary process. I can’t help but be scared about the payment process. You do not know how much this scholarship means to me. Also, this award has made everything worth it for me. I have tried to be the best person that I can in and outside of my sports and events especially at Lisle. I feel recognized. It is as if all of my hard work payed of by receiving this award and I couldn’t feel happier about it. I want people to look up to me. I have always looked up to my mom growing up and I want someone to do the same for me. One last time, I wanna say thank you so much, it means so much more than you think. This award is such a great accomplishment of mine that I will never forget about. Thank you, Meg de Buhr
Thank you so much for this scholarship. Band and music in general have been a huge part of my Lisle High School experience, so receiving this is a huge honor.
1. I am going to attend Iowa State University with a major in Food Science and a possible minor in either Environmental Science or Music. I have also been invited to be part of the honors college. I am planning, even if not as a minor, to continue being part of some of the bands on campus. 2. Once I complete my degree at Iowa State, I plan to go into the food science field, helping with either food safety testing, product and recipe development, or food distribution. I would like to be able to use my degree in a way that can help increase the quality and quantity of food to those who need it, such as refugees, people in low income housing, or those living in food deserts. 3. While I was at Lisle High School, I put a lot of time and effort into the music program. This all culminated earlier this year with being invited to practice and play with the ILMEA All-State Honors Band, and be recognized as the top Bass Trombonist in the state of Illinois. Being recognized and being able to play in that band, and be taught new techniques and perspectives by Director Dr. Travis Cross, was a great experience. It was a way of not only reaching new musical heights, but also being able to see the culmination of the years of work I had put in to get to that point. 4. I had many teachers that have been very influential to me over my years at Lisle, both through teaching me and giving me perspectives and advice on life. For example, all of my band directors, Mr. Gumina, Mr. Meyer, Mrs. Kiener, and Mr. Schraub have all shown me new perspectives on music, and I have always enjoyed working with them. If I had to pick a most influential teacher, I would say it is Mdme. Emily Novak, my French teacher. From her, I not only learned French, but gained so much perspective on life, and also just being able to go to her and talk about whatever might be on my mind. Out of all of my teachers, nobody has done more than her to influence my life in a positive way. 5. Having this award, apart from being able to pay for my college education, is a representation of all the years of practice and effort I put into to the Lisle Music program. I hope my accomplishments can inspire future Lisle students to achieve higher goals and milestones in music. I know there a lot of very talented Lisle musicians, and I hope that they will follow me in achieving high goals in music, such as trying out for All-State bands. The program has done so much for me, and I hope having this award, can give back some of what I got out of it. Again, thank you for this award. It truly means a lot. Please let me know if any more information is needed. My educational plan following graduating is that I will be attending Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa.
As of now I am going to school with an undecided major with the intent of giving myself more options to decide, I will also be attending this university to play on their women’s lacrosse team. I do have an interest in working with marine animals or the coral reef which is something that I would love to be able to pursue! A big accomplishment personally I would like to make is to buy a car, I have been saving up for the past year by working two jobs. The professional accomplishment I would like to make is to figure out my major and pursue a career that lets me travel and live without worry. The accomplishment that I made at Lisle High School that I am most proud of is having a lead role in this springs musical The Sister Act, I have never had a lead before and it was an absolutely amazing experience to have lines and even my own solos in songs as Sister Mary Lazuras. The teacher that was most influential was my junior year English teacher, Mr. Aske. He wasn’t supposed to even be our teacher but since the teacher who was mentoring him left, we got the best English class ever. Mr. Aske, though a bit inexperienced had been the reason why I think I’m still here today, through bullying and harassment of my peers Mr. Aske did his part as an educator to control the situation while it was going on in the classroom. He also made sure to check up on me during and outside of class by emails or even just commenting on the class work that I turned in. Unfortunately he moved to Romeoville for my senior year so I was never able to truly thank him for being an amazing teacher and person. I want to thank the Lisle Alumni for giving me the chance to share my story of how being a part of the arts and the drama department has been for me. Additionally, I want them to know how much this scholarship is going to help me pay off my college tuition, it really was a generous amount given for this scholarship and I’m very happy to have won it. 1. I plan on attending Universal Technical Institute and I plan on studying Auto Tech + Ford Certification
2. I want to graduate from Universal Technical Institute and my plan is to use the certifications I receive to get a job in the Auto Tech industry. 3. I had a hard time in math and I overcame that and had to push myself to do good and now I enjoy math a lot. 4. Mr. Jaegle. He pushed every single one of his students to be successful and he would help his students if they needed help on math or anything in general. he’s most influential because he pushed everyone to do well and also to do well after high school. 5. All I can say is thank you for awarding me this scholarship it is really going to help me pay off my college tuition. I can’t thank this organization enough and i hope it continues and help students at Lisle Hugh School. Consider Donating to the Carlin Nalley Foundation
What is your educational plan following graduation---what school do you plan to attend and what subject will you study?
I am attending Illinois State University to study middle-level education to become a junior high history teacher. I’ll get my bachelor's, start teaching then get my master's. What do you want to accomplish personally or professionally following your next educational milestone? I want to personally work enough to make enough money to pay for college without having student debt by the end of my bachelor's degree. Then finish my bachelor's degree within 4 years because it’s getting more complicated these days. Of what accomplishment at Lisle High School are you most proud? My GPA, because of how hard I worked to get a high GPA I was able to win these scholarships that will make college life a lot easier. What teacher or faculty member was most influential to you at Lisle High School and why? Mrs. Kerrn because she didn’t initially want to be a teacher but she is absolutely the best teacher I’ve ever had. Her personality makes class so much more fun and engaging. I appreciate the work she does for our class. Her ability to make any subject interesting is impressive, she’s the teacher you can go to for anything, just the sweetest human being, and most educated teacher. She has helped me a lot and I feel like I can make her proud going to Illinois State like she did and becoming a teacher, maybe even back at Lisle. The Lisle Alumni have generously supported this scholarship program of which you are a beneficiary. Is there anything you would like to share with them about the significance of your award to you? You guys really don’t know how much this means to me. My family and I's number one stressor in life right now is paying for my college tuition and my brother's master's degree at the same time. I sacrifice my teen years to be at work making money, so this scholarship will be such a huge help in getting me through college. I can’t thank you enough. 1) I will be attending the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. I plan to major in biology and minor in Spanish with a possible sustainability certificate.
2) I hope to participate in ecology research to better understand and spread awareness about environmental issues to benefit the planet and humans alike. I also intend to further my writing and communication skills in both Spanish and English in order to become a better leader in the science community and help essential knowledge reach more people. 3) I'm most proud of my success in Science Olympiad. I've earned medals at both the regional and state level in various events, including ornithology, protein modeling, green generation, cell biology, and fossils. Beyond the awards, I'm so grateful for the knowledge and lifelong friends I've gained through my involvement with this organization. Without the hours I put into Scioly in high school, I'd never have discovered my passion for birds, plants, and the environment. 4) Mr. LaScala was my most influential teacher at LHS. In both Honors and AP Biology, Mr. LaScala exceeded the standard curriculum. He cared about each student, taking a genuine interest in our passions and goals. He incorporated plant labs to fuel my love for botany, giving me hands-on experiences to see what a biology career could be like. His teaching philosophy helped me thrive, too: he catered to countless learning styles and always checked in to make sure we were getting it. I always felt supported and heard. Beyond classwork, Mr. LaScala set up Zoom calls with real working biologists, giving us an authentic look at life beyond college. Mr. LaScala helped my budding love for biology bloom, and I’m so grateful he’s been a part of my high school journey. 5) I would like to thank all of the Lisle Alumni for their dedication to supporting students through higher education and their generosity in providing me with this scholarship. I'm so grateful not only for the monetary support but for the recognition of my hard work as a science student at Lisle. I feel that all the hours and energy put into my four years at Lisle have paid off. Thank you so much for helping me as I begin my college journey! Your kindness and support will not be forgotten, even as I head off to new opportunities in Georgia. Thank you again!
