Babe Didrikson Zaharias “was a natural athlete, but she knew that even the natural athlete can never become a great one without adding to physical aptitude certain other qualities of mind and spirit: the patience to persist against odds, the will to work endlessly, and the indomitable determination to win -- not necessarily to win over others, but to master the sport itself."

Donation from the class of '66
My name is Steve Ferrin, and I was chairperson for the recent LCHS Class of 66 50th Reunion. We raised $742.00 for the Carlin Nalley Foundation. We would like the money to go specifically to the scholarships attached to Dr. John Mulcare and Mr. Robert Jones. They were two of our teachers and mentors who made a significant difference in our lives.

Babe Didrickson Zaharias Award and Jones-Beato Scholarship for 2020 Carmen Johnson
I plan to study Economics at Brown University in Providence, RI. After graduating I’ll probably work in corporate, but I hope to find a job concentrated in environmental work or music business.
My most influential teacher would be Mr. Patrick Woyna because he taught me to love writing and critical thinking again, and his passion for his work (in the classroom and on the track) is absolutely contagious.
The most significant experience I had would be the first fall play that I did sound crew for. My first high school didn’t have theater, and I love audio engineering, so transferring to Lisle my sophomore year was an opportunity to explore this passion of mine.
Having only been in Lisle for 3 years, there were times when the fact that I was essentially an outsider to this close community always lingered in my mind. The only constant I could continue throughout all 4 years of my high school career was volleyball. I believe all seniors want to be able to look back and know that they left an impact on the school. So for someone who has lived in Lisle shorter than almost all of the other students, to be recognized by my coaches and peers means more to me than they could possibly realize. In high school, it’s easy to reduce your value to grades, awards, and college acceptances, but I would like to thank the faculty and classmates at my school who accepted me with open arms, and I would also like to thank the Alumni who deemed me worthy of this Scholarship. Thank you so much.

To the Carlin Nalley Foundation,
This fall, I will be attending Arizona State University and I will be majoring in marketing. I had so many influential experiences at Lisle, but I think if I had to choose one that was the most influential it would be going to state for soccer this year. Being a part of that team is something I’ll never forget and this season showed me that hard work does pay off. I would like to sincerely thank the alumni again, it’s such an honor to be recognized for this award, and it wouldn’t be possible without you!!
